The aim of the Travelling Academy is to bring contemporary classical music from the XXth and XXIst century to institutions dedicated to education, such as colleges, universities and conservatories; with a range of activities from a broad introduction to instrumental practice. The possibilities of knowledge transmission, vary from lectures to individual instrument classes, composition, musical analysis and chamber music.
The basic idea is to provide as much information as possibl in a very short period of time with a daily schedule that encompasses all the activities in fusion with the schedules of the host institution, all this in order to capitalize time and involve students and teachers with the offered proposal.
The Travelling Academy offers different activities that adapts to the needs and characteristics of the host institution:
- Lectures on the music of the twentieth and twenty-first century
- Lectures on the evolution of musical instruments in the twentieth and twenty-first century
- Composition and musical analysis classes
- Instrument masterclasses
- Chamber music from the second half of the twentieth century to nowadays
Lectures on the music of the twentieth and twenty-first century
The gap between classical contemporary music and society, depends mostly on the little diffusion of the classical repertoire created since the second half of the twentieth century. This conference aims to give a broad introduction to the repertoire that has been created since the second half of the twentieth century until today, ranging repertoire from the solo to the orchestra and the new mix with electronic media and video.
The goal is to make an authentic Atlas of music in recent years from a "historical materialism” point of view and not just adding events until today, but interweave them in music history.
Lectures on the evolution of musical instruments in the twentieth and twenty-first century
Through these conferences, the goal is to show a general view of the new repertoire that exists today for the instrument. The writing and the developing new extended techniques of composition of the XXth and XXIst century composers has given new insight of the instrumental possibilities. We believe that these examples shown live and with a direct communication, will always be clearer and a better effective approach that can be through internet or other telematic media that exists.
Composition and musical analysis classes
Composition and musical analysis classes are focused for conservatory or university students that are becoming professionals. These classes are focused in extensive musical analysis of significant works since the second half of the twentieth century, begining with the historical influences, through musical manufacture, until the final creation and musical importance. Also, students who have written works or have a project of composition, will have the opportunity to discuss and exchange points views with the speaker/rapporteur.
The aim of these masterclasses is in addition to individually work pieces with the students, initiate, recommend and make aware students towards a repertoire of the most recent classical music written today. It is known that the effort that educational institutions engage in the field of contemporary classical music is still nowadays not enough. What we want is to open the repertoire choices of the students, to provide direct access to a music and knowledge that only through personal experience can be provided.
Chamber music from the second half of the twentieth century to nowadays
Planned in advance, students will study individual parts of the chamber works to be interpreted with SMASH ensemble. During the Travelling Academy rehearsal times will be scheduled with the aim to perfomr the works in a concert at the end of the Academy. The objective is to rehearse, exchange ideas on the works and learn ways to approach new music from the point of view of musicians with professional experience in this field. The repertoire can range from duets to larger formations with conductor.
